Desktop PCs and older monitors
Windows 10 is common on hardware that is a few years old, and older monitors are less consistent about DDC/CI support. Some have it switched off in the on-screen menu by default, which makes software look broken until you enable it.
If a monitor genuinely does not respond, a software display dimmer can still darken the image without touching the backlight.
Adding brightness control to Windows 10
