Why Windows does not expose the control
Windows treats an external display as a peripheral that manages its own image settings. Brightness, contrast and colour presets live in the monitor's firmware and are reached through its on-screen display. Since Windows cannot guarantee a monitor will accept remote commands, it does not show a slider at all.
Software-based control over DDC/CI
The display data channel command interface lets a PC read and write monitor settings over the same cable that carries video. A brightness utility uses it to set the backlight level, which is a real hardware change rather than a darkened image.

- Confirm DDC/CI is enabled in the monitor's own menu, often under Setup, System or Others.
- Connect the monitor directly to the graphics card with a known-good HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
- Avoid daisy-chaining and passive adapters while testing.
- Update the graphics driver, then restart the utility so it re-detects displays.
- On docks and KVM switches, test the same monitor on a direct cable to isolate the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there no brightness slider for my external monitor?
Windows deliberately hides it. External monitors are separate devices, so brightness has to be sent to the monitor rather than set inside Windows.
Can I control brightness through a USB-C dock?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the dock passes the monitor control channel through. Test with a direct cable to see whether the dock is the limiting factor.
My monitor changes brightness but the value snaps back. Why?
Some monitors override brightness when a dynamic contrast or eco mode is active. Disable those features in the on-screen menu and try again.
What if my monitor does not support DDC/CI at all?
Use the monitor's own buttons for the backlight, and optionally add a software overlay dimmer for finer, darker adjustments.
