What neither app can change

Software cannot invent hardware features. If a monitor has DDC/CI disabled, sits behind an adapter or KVM that drops the channel, or exposes no brightness control at all, both apps will fail the same way. Start with DDC/CI monitor control and the fixes in fix external monitor brightness on Windows. To go darker than the panel's minimum, use an overlay display dimmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Twinkle Tray and Brightness Control the same app?

No. They are separate Windows applications from different developers. The similarity is that both adjust display brightness from within Windows.

Which one supports external monitors better?

Both rely on DDC/CI, so hardware support matters more than the app. If a monitor ignores one of them, it will usually ignore the other for the same reason: DDC/CI disabled, an adapter in the chain, or a KVM switch.

Can I run both at once?

Not recommended. Two utilities sending brightness commands to the same display can fight each other, making levels jump or snap back.

Does either app dim below the monitor's minimum?

Hardware brightness stops at the panel's floor. To go darker you need a software overlay dimmer, described on our display dimmer page.
